How to Look After Your Cutlery Set

Cutlery: something we all use, but rarely think a lot about. In fact, it is one of the most use items in our home and if you want it to serve you well, then there are certain things that you need to ensure, or else you may find yourself needing a new set more often than you think.

Most households will have day to day cutlery, and possibly a set reserved for special occasions too. Your 'special' set will probably be all nicely boxed and bundled up to prevent wear and tear, but the other set you use will just be lying in a drawer somewhere, maybe in a tidy to separate out the different components. If you really want to have a long lasting set though, then you will need to care for these pieces well.

When was the last time you sharpened your knives? When did you last polish everything up? Do you use a dishwasher for your pieces?

You really should make sure that you do even the basic things, just to make sure everything remains in good working condition. Hand wash your cutlery, as particles from other items and from food will fly around the dishwasher and cause small pits within your cutlery. They may not seem like much, but they net and mark the metal and just make everything that little bit less perfect. It barely takes any time to rinse your cutlery with warm water and a gentle anti-bacterial soap. Leave it to air dry and then polish off any water marks, or else towel dry with a soft and clean towel.

Keep cutlery in the best way you can. This really should be a cabinet, or with separate storage spaces for each piece, but as long as you keep them all facing the same way and are careful to separate your everyday knives from your sharper ones and so on, then you should be OK to keep them in a drawer tidy. It is worth making that extra bit of effort, as your cutlery works hard for you and can last many, many years if you just treat it right.

Sharpen up your knives regularly, as they can become too blunt, to the stage where sharpening will not work anymore. You need to maintain a good blade, as this will work most effectively for you, even on the knives that you do not use often. If you go through the process routinely, for example once a month, then you can be sure that you are making sure that your utensils stay top quality.
